Online Marketing Success – The F.O.C.U.S. Formula

by: Dr. Ellen Britt

A few months ago, I came across something online that simply delighted me, so naturally, I shared it on social media. The response was immediate, with people liking and sharing it with their communities, as well as commenting on how much they enjoyed it as well.

That ‘something’ was an acronym, where you take the first letter of each word in a phrase and use those letters to spell out the very concept the phrase is trying to get across. This not only makes the phrase more memorable, but packages it in a way that really allows the reader to ‘get’ the learning in a concentrated form.

That acronym is F.O.C.U.S.

Of course the ordinary word ‘focus’ is often bandied about in marketing circles. You hear this kind of advice all the time.

Focus on what you are doing; hone in on one task and finish it completely before you move on; don’t let things like social media distract your focus

and so forth. But as the following acronym makes clear, the F.O.C.U.S mindset is SO much more that this:

F.O.C.U.S. = Follow One Course Until Success

This gives a whole new meaning to the word! As an online entrepreneur, you are probably naturally attracted to many different ideas. There are so many new things to try, and with the ever-changing world of online marketing, new things pop up in front of your face nearly every day of the week.

Plus, with multiple information sources bombarding you from every angle, it gets harder and harder to keep your attention on one thing for very long.

Sure, maybe you have disciplined yourself not to check your email or your text messages while you finish an important task, but F.O.C.U.S. asks you to go so much further. A true F.O.C.U.S. online marketing mindset demands you pick one course in your business, one primary way of monetizing your value, and stick with it until you have success AND… here comes the important part…

even AFTER you have success! So how do you know what course of action to take?

The Three Stages of F.O.C.U.S.

Identify what stage you are in (below) and then work from there:

Focus Magnifying Glass

Stage One: If you have not yet identified a way of turning your value and expertise into attracting clients and/or selling products, then that is your first step. Work with someone who has succeeded in doing what you want to do and fine tune your steps. This may mean developing coaching packages and setting up a lead generation funnel to get people to become your clients.

Or it may mean developing an information product and working out a way to sell it repeatedly or even something else altogether.

Stage Two: Actually put Step One into action. So many people get through Step One, take a few baby steps toward making it happen, then decide just because they don’t have spectacular results right out of the gate, the project is a failure. Then they are off to repeat the process, in a never-ending cycle of failure!

Stage Three: Refine what’s working (even if it’s not perfect yet) until you are getting the quantity and type of clients you desire or you are making consistent sales of your information product or both.

Stage Four: Here’s a trap that I’ve seen my colleagues fall into (and I’ve been in that pit myself!) Don’t allow boredom to derail you! In this stage, things are working and humming along but all of a sudden you get what my grandmother used to call a ‘wild hair’….

and you decide that you’re just tired of this way of working or the people you are attracting are just not the ones you really want. Or any number of excuses. So you blindly proceed to throw out a perfectly good business model for something unproven!

Don’t laugh…I’ve seen this happen more than once and yes, I’ve been guilty of it myself. It’s a painful lesson that I’ll never repeat.

If you have reached Step Four and are tempted to throw everything away and start over, don’t worry, there are things you can do to keep your passion alive. I’ll go into these at a later date.

For now, work on identifying ONE course of action and follow through on it until you see results. That means having only one core business so your F.O.C.U.S. online marketing success mindset stays sharp!
